Col. John Wilson Williamson, Sr. U. S. Air Force Retired, 84, of Ridgewood Drive, Hartwell, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2016 at St. Mary’s Health Care System, Athens.

Born on June 18, 1932 in Florence, SC he was the son of the late Robert Edward Williamson and Olga Nadine Rush Williamson. Col. Williamson received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina and received his Master’s degree in Communications from George Washington University. Col. Williamson retired in 1979 as a Colonel after 23 years of service with the US Air Force. During his service to his country, he flew the first reconnaissance missions during the Cuban Missile crisis aboard the B66 Destroyer out of Shaw Air Force Base and was a Vietnam War veteran. Col. Williamson was an avid and accomplished pilot. Flying was a passion and he owned numerous aircraft during his lifetime. Never one to slow down, after his career in the military he became an entrepreneur in the Cable television and restaurant industries and consulted for a number of companies in quality control and management. Col. Williamson was a member and past-president of MOAA, member of the VFW and the Hartwell American Legion Post 109. He also had served on the Hart County DFACS board, Hart-Franklin Airport Authority and supporting literacy in Hart County. Col. Williamson was a very active and faithful member of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church until his illness.

Survivors include his wife: Grace Taylor Williamson; one son: John Williamson, Jr. and his wife Kathie of Hartwell; one daughter: Paula Church and her husband Samuel of Greenville, SC; one sister: Margaret Beth Williamson of Greenville, SC; cousin Steve West, who he considered to be a brother at heart, and his wife Karen of Florence, SC; four grandchildren: Emma Church Loyal and her husband Christopher, Taylor Church, Johnny Williamson III, Daisy Church and two step-grandchildren: Christopher Green, Leslie Solorzano.
